"In November 2008 I had planned a firework display for my children. We started the evening by lighting some sparklers for the children, and this is where it went wrong. The 4 sparklers I was lighting flared up in my hand causing severe burns to my left hand.
I was taken to Hamilton hospital where they told me I will need skin grafts and would end up with scarring that would make my hand “claw”.
I had a nurse change my dressing daily. After three days, I returned to Hamilton Burns Unit to be informed I would definitely need grafts.
It was on my return, I was telling this to a friend who recommended I try Honey on my burn. I am always very skeptical of what I thought was an old wives tale, but mentioned this to Charity from Mossops honey, whom I know through work.
She told me that the healing properties of honey are renowned, and gave me some samples of Mossops UMF15+ honey, which I applied to my wounds instead of the suggested moisturiser. I was amazed that within days my skin had started to get its pink healthy skin colour back. When I returned to the Burns Unit for a pre-graft evaluation I was told that the skin had started healing and that there may not be a need for grafts after all!
I continued with the honey dressings and was truly amazed at the speed of the recovery.
After 2 weeks my skin was still very new and tender, but I had no “clawing” of my joints and remarkably no scar tissue.
I am now fully recovered and to look at my hand you wouldn’t even know I had burnt it.
