Cosmetic Chemicals to Avoid

The average woman applies 200+ chemicals to her face every day, 60% of these are absorbed into the bloodstream.

There are many unavoidable nasties in the food we eat, the water we drink and the pollution in the air so why not do what you can to avoid putting more directly on your skin? Here are a list of SOME of the chemical ingredients you will find in many cosmetic products.

Chemical How it effects you and your skin
Ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS) May cause erythema and skin irritation
“-ate” as a suffix
(eg. sorbitan stearate, laurate, palmitate, oleate etc.) 
Contaminated with 1,4-Dioxane which is a carcinogen (cancer causing) and hormone system destroyer
Benzalkonium chloride Causes skin irritation, contact dermatitis & allergies
 Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)  Causes allergies, causes contact dermatitis & is a carcinogen
butylated hudroxyanisole (BHA). Causes allergies & contact dermatitis
butyl stearate These ingredients have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis, would induce acne as well.
butylene glycol,  Cannot be absorbed by skin, suffocates skin and clogs pores causing acne. Is suspected to also cause carcinogens, and mutagens.
Bronopol May contain, release, or break down into formaldehyde which is a known neurotoxin and carcinogen 
Chloromethylisothiazolinone  Causes skin irritation, contact dermatitis & allergies
cyclomethicone Clogs pores, causes acne, carcinogens & mutagens
It also has potential to cause tumors.
DMDM hydrantoin  May contain, release, or break down into formaldehyde which is a known neurotoxin and carcinogen 
Diazolidinyl urea May contain, release, or break down into formaldehyde which is a known neurotoxin and carcinogen 
dimethicone (Silicone = anything ending in 'cone') Clogs pores, causes acne, carcinogens & mutagens
it also has potential to cause tumors.
Diethanolamine (DEA) May form nitrosamines which are potent carcinogens
(ethylene oxide, EO or propylene oxide, PO),    “-eth” as their suffix (eg. sodium laureth sulfate 3EO, 7EO, 12EO etc.) May contain 1,4-Dioxane which is carcinogen and hormone system destroyer 
Glycerin  (can also be obtained from a vegetable source) Causes dry-burn &  skin irritations
isothiazolinone Causes skin irritation, contact dermatitis & allergies
Imidiazolidinyl urea May contain, release, or break down into formaldehyde which is a known neurotoxin and carcinogen 
isopropyl isostearate These ingredients have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis, would induce acne as well.
isopropyl myristate These ingredients have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis, would induce acne as well.
isostearyl neopentanate These ingredients have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis, would induce acne as well.
isopropyl palmitate These ingredients have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis, would induce acne as well.
isocetyl stearate These ingredients have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis, would induce acne as well.
Lauryl or cocoyl sarcosine May cause erythema and skin irritation
Methylisothiazolinone & methylchloroisothiazolinone Causes skin irritation, contact dermatitis & allergies
myristyl lactate These ingredients have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis, would induce acne as well.
myristyl ether propionate These ingredients have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis, would induce acne as well.
Mineral oil (Petroleum-derived) Cannot be absorbed by skin, suffocates skin and clogs pores causing acne. Is suspected to also cause carcinogens, and mutagens.
Monethanolamine (MEA) May form nitrosamines which are potent carcinogens
Parabens                                           (Methyl, propyl, butyl & ethyl) Cause allergic reaction and skin irritation,  a carcinogen, a potent cancer inducer
propylene glycol stearate These ingredients have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis, would induce acne as well.
Paraffin (Petroleum-derived) Cannot be absorbed by skin, suffocates skin and clogs pores causing acne. Is suspected to also cause carcinogens, and mutagens.
Propylene glycol Causes contact dermatitis, inhibits skin cell growth, damages kidney and liver, cause rashes and dry skin & damages skin surface       
PEG compounds (eg. polyethylene glycol) Contaminated with 1,4-Dioxane which is carcinogen and hormone system destroyer
 PEG-derivatives      (eg. PEG-40 castor oil, PEG-40 stearate etc.)  Contaminated with 1,4-Dioxane which is carcinogen (cancer causing) and hormone system destroyer 
Quaternium-7,15,31,60 etc May contain, release, or break down into formaldehyde which is a known neurotoxin and carcinogen 
Sorbitol Catches the water from air for moisture, so in a dry climate it will draw the water from the skin leaving your skin dry.
Sodium polyxyethylene lauryl sulfate May contain 1,4-Dioxane which is carcinogen and hormone system destroyer
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) May contain 1,4-Dioxane which is carcinogen and hormone system destroyer
Sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) May contain 1,4-Dioxane which is carcinogen and hormone system destroyer
Sodium cocoyl isethionate May cause erythema and skin irritation
Sodium lauroyl or cocoyl sarcosinate May cause erythema and skin irritation
